Regulating DIY genetic tests

CA's call for stricter regulation of the supply and promotion of genetic tests direct to the public was recently supported by the Human Genetics Commission (HGC). In its initial proposals, the HGC points to the need for over-the-counter genetic testing kits to be subject to greater scrutiny. CA has

long argued that the emergence of over-the-counter sale of genetic tests is ripe for exploitation. CA's own expert evaluation of biotechnology company Sciona's lifestyle genetic testing kits raised questions over both their validity and efficacy. It also illustrated the need for consumer protection from potentially misleading and harmful information in this new and developing area.

To ensure that this happens, CA would like to see systems in place to guarantee the validity and usefulness of tests and the prior approval of claims made. Provisions for counselling, advice and information also need to be available to consumers. Moreover, protection governing the storage, retention, availability and use of personal genetic information is needed to counter potential abuse. The HGC will make final recommendations to the government in early April.
