WITH THE FEDERAL BUDGET OUT OF THE WAY, Charter questioned the Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello, on the state of the Australian economy, the Government's plans for economic reform, the compliance burden for business and the accounting profession's needs.
After 14 years of growth, do you see an inevitable end? What should business planners look out for?
We are currently experiencing the longest economic expansion since the 1960s. While it is natural to ask if this is going to come to an end, in fact Australia's economic fundamentals remain strong and are supportive of continued economic growth.
Strong growth in employment has seen the unemployment rate fall to a near 30-year low of 5.1 %. Inflation outcomes have been moderate, and there are few signs of significant wage or inflationary pressure. Interest rates are at low levels by historical standards. International demand for commodities should support growth in Australia's exports.
