tax abatement

reduction in ad valorem real estate taxes granted by a municipality or local taxing authority resulting from an easement, exercise of eminent domain by the taxing authority, natural disaster, or other reasons.

reprieve from a tax obligation. Tax abatements vary from partial to complete, according to how much of the tax is forgiven. Tax abatements are often given by governments as an incentive for real estate or industrial development.
