stalking horse

in a bankruptcy auction sale, the lead bidder designated by the debtor to set the minimum price it will receive for its asset in the sale. The stalking horse bidder takes a risk that the auction will be disappointing and the asset sold at a lower price, and is usually given an incentive to take that risk.
