Business Definition for: portfolio lender
portfolio lender

lender, frequently a mortgage originator, who holds loans in portfolio until maturity (or until the loans are paid off by the borrower), and does not sell loans to investors in the secondary market. A portfolio lender derives its net income from the loan spread, or difference between its interest earning assets and deposit liabilities, as opposed to a mortgage banker, whose income primarily is from fees.
