layout

  1. diagrammatic drawing of a job prepared for typesetting that indicates the arrangement of the copy elements and the style of type to be used on the image carrier. There are three types of layouts, depending upon the extent to which they accurately and completely represent the finished product: a rough layout, a finished layout, and a comprehensive layout . Space advertisements can be evaluated on the basis of a layout, but other print products, such as product packages, booklets, or brochures, that involve more than a two-dimensional image must be evaluated with a dummy in addition to a layout, to check the construction, binding, sequencing of pages, and so forth.   2. sequence of printed matter, such as the pages of a catalog.
