delivery date

  1. first day of the month in which delivery is to be made under a futures contract. Since sales are on a seller's option basis, delivery can be on any day of the month, as long as proper notice is given.
  2. third business day following a regular way transaction of stocks or bonds. Seller's option delivery can be anywhere from 3 to 60 days, though there may be a purchase-price adjustment to compensate for delayed delivery . The settlement date was changed from 5 days to 3 days effective June 1, 1995, after approval by the SEC. New deadline is known as T (for trade)-plus-three.

delivery date

  1. day in the month when financial instruments or commodities are deliverable under a financial futures contract. This may occur any day during the contract month at the seller's option, so long as proper notice is given. Actual delivery normally takes place two days after the seller's delivery notice . See also first day notice .
  2. day that a purchaser of securities takes possession. Delivery may take place under five-day regular way delivery, cash basis delivery, or seller's option delivery at a later date. See also settlement .
  3. maturity date of a forward exchange contract in foreign exchange, at which time the exchange of currencies takes place.
