a market capitalization weighted index. The index represents 500 of the largest companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Market capitalization is the only eligibility requirement of constituents, as liquidity is not considered for this index, with the exception of foreign domiciled companies. The index was established by ASX at 500 points in January 1980. As of August 31, 2000, the index comprised 99% of the Australian market. The S&P/ASX 200 replaced the index as the market's leading indicator in 2000.
