There were 35 extended mass layoffs in the furniture industry in the fourth quarter of 2001, affecting 5,336 workers, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
That was up from 23 extended mass layoffs in the third quarter, and only eight in the fourth quarter of
An extended mass layoff is defined as a layoff of at least 31 days that involves 50 or more individuals from a single establishment.
