Papa John's International
Papa John's International makes a lot of dough -- pizza dough, that is. The company operates the world's #3 pizza chain (behind YUM! Brands' Pizza Hut brand and Domino's) with more than 3,700 pizzerias across the U.S. and in more than 30 international markets. Its restaurants offer several pizza styles and topping choices, as well as a few specialty pies such as The Works and All the Meats. Papa John's locations typically offer delivery and carry-out service only. It owns and operates about 600 locations, while the rest are franchised. Founder and chairman John Schnatter owns more than 20% of the company.
A high growth rank (#25) and a solid financial strength rank (#49) put Papa John's International in the top 10 of the Franchise AllStars for the first time in 2012.
Quality improvements and technology upgrades, including an iPhone app with ordering and location-finding functions, helped drive company sales in 2011. One of its key growth strategies was to open new stores in nontraditional venues. Papa John's also enjoyed strong growth outside the U.S., with new locations opening in more than 30 countries.
To encourage this growth, Papa John's has offered development incentives in which new franchisees are exempt from paying a franchisee fee, pay no royalty fees on sales for up to 12 months, and receive a free set of ovens. Papa John's also provides franchisees with a list of lending institutions and is listed on the SBA's Franchise Registry.
A multiyear deal making Papa John's the official pizza sponsor for the NFL will benefit franchisees in North America and the United Kingdom.
2011 AllStar Rank: 40
