Jersey Mike's Subs
Started in 1956 with a single shop on the Jersey Shore, Jersey Mike’s helped pioneer the submarine sandwich concept. The original founder built the store into a thriving landmark, and in the 1970s, current owner Peter Cancro — then a high-school student who worked at the shop — decided to buy the business. Tradition is a big part of Jersey Mike’s concept, and Cancro has continued the original store’s tradition of secret spices, personalized service, and fresh, high-quality ingredients. Jersey Mike’s breads are baked fresh daily in each store, and meats and cheeses are sliced fresh for each sandwich. The company emphasizes its distinction from impersonal fast food chains by encouraging all Jersey Mike’s franchisees to become involved in the community where they operate.
An aggressive expansion plan to double the number of its store locations in the next five years helped Jersey Mike's Subs achieve a higher growth rank (#18) and move into the Franchise AllStar's top 25. Solid ranks in longevity (#38) and Web visibility (#36) also contributed to the sandwich chain's climb in the ranking.
Jersey Mike's places strong emphasis on cause marketing, often partnering with local charities. In May 2011, the company entered into its first national initiative with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The campaign attracted more women to the chain's stores -- a key demographic it is looking to grow.
In 2011 the company introduced online ordering and a mobile ordering app for the iPhone.
Jersey Mike's Subs is listed on the SBA's Franchise Registry and has established programs with national lenders.
