What do five guys know about making hamburgers? If they’re the guys from the Murrell family who created Five Guys Burgers and Fries, the answer is plenty. The award-winning eatery has a simple menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, fries that are cooked with peanut oil, and drinks. According to Five Guys, “There are over 250,000 possible ways to order a burger at Five Guys.” And “we use only fresh, never frozen ground beef.” Hamburger lovers interested in becoming franchisees must have previous food and beverage industry, business ownership, and employee management experience. Five Guys provides franchisee training as well as ongoing support.
Why This Company Makes Our AllStar List
President Obama’s much televised sudden craving for a Five Guys Burgers & Fries in 2009 has quickly helped propel this relative newcomer to franchising into an American icon (well, almost). The president’s visit focused a lot of attention on the chain, helping its brand awareness climb to #101, up from #163 last year.
Franchising only since 2002, Five Guys has continued to grow substantially in units, ranking #7 in growth in this year’s survey, up from an already impressive #12 in last year’s rankings. This fast growth may be fueled by its requirement that franchisees develop a minimum of five restaurants. However, Five Guys dropped from #91 in financial strength in last year’s rankings to #131 this year.
The company continues to get lots of press and praise for the quality of its food, regularly winning best burger awards. Five Guys has also encouraged a fan following by using social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook.
