Bibby: What should a person expect in return for royalty payments? Let’s look at the question in two ways. First, on a general note, royalties paid to a franchisor should not exceed value received. That means that royalties should not be more than the total value found in such items as supplier discounts, continuing education, or ongoing support regarding management issues. Sometimes putting a dollar value on certain items is not easy but can be noted. Second, the franchisor’s obligations are always specified in the disclosure document so once again, only due diligence before the purchase will reveal what the franchisor is actually committing to in terms of return for its royalties and that commitment might be very different from what is talked about during the sales process.
