Little Caesar Enterprises Inc.'s slice of the market pie dwindled for the eighth year in a row, but the slowing economy may be a boon for the struggling pizza chain.

Detroit-based Little Caesar was overtaken by rival Papa John's International Inc. as the nation's No. 3 pizza chain, according to figures released last week by Technomic Inc., a Chicago-based consulting and research firm.

Louisville, Ky.-based Papa John's (Nasdaq: PZZA) reported $1.7 billion in U.S. systemwide sales last year, compared with Little Caesar's estimated $1.3 billion. That's a drop o
