Retail Signs of the Times

The Boston Globe reports that Coldwater Creek will improve its pants and jackets, among other products, to lure customers back into store. Smart move. I am not the only female I know who stopped shopping at CC. We found the quality lacking and the styles frumpy.

Reuters reports that Steve & Barry's is about to file for bankruptcy. Too bad. Their extremely affordable yet stylish clothing was a worthy concept. Let's hope Steve and Barry find a white knight. Soon.

New Mexico Business Weekly writes that McDonald's is about to open coffee bars at most of its restaurants around the country. Hmm, but will they feel and look like Mickey D's? If so, I'm not interested. Fast food decor is, um, tacky and not conducive to a thought-provoking cuppa. Will Joe drinkers be assaulted by screaming children? Ugh.

MSNBC reports that the economic doldrums plus sky-high gas and food prices and, oh yes, the housing slump, are sending more shoppers to Wal-Mart. Well, maybe so, but I was in a Wal-Mart just yesterday, and the joint was darn-near empty.

There you have it, a glimpse around the retail merry-go-round. More tomorrow.
