It's been almost three years since Dr. Charles Thomas moved his winery from downtown Indianapolis to Plainfield, and he has no complaints.
Formerly located on Madison Avenue in a historic building that lacked the amenities Thomas needed to expand his operation, the Chateau Thomas Winery now
Thomas, a former physician, said travelers now account for 50 percent of his business, which is quite a change from the downtown location. There, Union Station patrons could walk to the winery. But when Union Station closed, Thomas' business suffered. After eight years at the Madison Avenue location, it was time to move.
So Thomas studied demographic records and learned 50,000 cars pass by Plainfield on I-70 every day.
"It seemed to be the way to energize the business," he said.
It worked. During the past three years, sales have
increased 20 percent, he said. While employee numbers
have remained steady, the new winery boasts an
upstairs banquet room that overlooks 1,300-gallon
wine-making vats. The room seats roughly 125 people
and can be rented for office parties or wedding
receptions. Thomas also is considering a working
relationship with a local chef.
Besides moving his business, Thomas opened a retail shop in Nashville, Ind., which he said is doing well.
This summer, Thomas plans to conduct outdoor activities at his winery to coincide with a wine festival June 10 at Military Park. June is Indiana Wine Grape Month.
There are 21 wineries in Indiana, an increase from the 12 when he entered the field. The demand for good wine - especially red wine - is increasing though, Thomas noted.
"It may have finally dawned on some people that wine is good for you," he said. "Wine with meals is a good way to enjoy life."
