WOODBRIDGE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 1995--National cookie and cracker manufacturer, Sunshine Biscuits, Inc., announced a corporate restructuring plan which includes the closing of its Oakland, California bakery. The company today provided 60-day notice
of plant closure to each of its 300 workers in Oakland.Sunshine said it will close its Oakland plant on July 14. "The facility was the most underutilized of the company's bakeries and is in need of significant capital investment to replace older equipment," said Arthur G. Murray, President and CEO, Sunshine Biscuits, Inc.
"This was a very difficult decision to make," said Murray. "We will do everything in our power to help our employees find other jobs."
The 560,000-square-foot bakery, located at 851 81st Ave., Oakland was opened in 1942. The closure of the facility will improve bakery utilization at the company's other plants. The company's two California distribution centers will not be affected by the bakery closing.
"Sunshine products are a top choice of consumers. This restructuring program will enhance Sunshine's long term profitability and is designed to help the company pursue a vigorous growth strategy in the coming years," Murray said.
Sunshine's corporate restructuring plan also calls for the sale of its Salerno Biscuit Division in Niles, Illinois.
Sunshine Biscuits, Inc. is headquartered in Woodbridge, N.J. It was founded in 1902 in Kansas City, Missouri. The company's products are household names across the nation and include CHEEZ-IT Snack Crackers, SUNSHINE KRISPY Saltine Crackers, HI HO Topping Crackers, VIENNA FINGERS Sandwich Cookies, and HYDROX Creme Filled Chocolate Sandwich Cookies.
