Member banks of the Indiana Bankers Association provided such outstanding financial literacy outreach during the 2004-05 school year that they received two national awards from the American Bankers Association Education Foundation. Indiana banks received the 2004 Get Smart About Credit Day State Participation
The honors were bestowed in July at an ABA Staff Workshop in Chicago. Winners were judged by criteria in several categories, including the number of presentations made to consumers, the percentage of the state's student population bankers reached, and the number of banks and bankers participating.
On Get Smart About Credit Day, held last October, bankers across the country taught students how to budget their money, use credit cards responsibly and build a positive payment history. On National Teach Children to Save Day, held in April, bankers gave classroom presentations about saving and developing money management skills to students in kindergarten through grade 12. Elementary schoolchildren learned the concept of saving money, while junior high and high school students tackled compounding interest, budgeting, setting goals and money management. Both financial literacy initiatives were sponsored by the ABA Education Foundation.
