Your core message is based on what you want to accomplish, and it circulates around a central theme (the most important point you want to make). Along with that should be two or three big ideas that support the central theme.

The core message also includes an action statement-which is directly

related to the central theme. For example, if you're addressing your board and your central theme is "Developing business membership is vital to our competitiveness," your action statement might be, "Please approve the budget increase for business membership development."

Once you have a crystal clear core message, you take that message and incorporate it into an opening, body and closing. Your opening includes three components: an attention statement, the central theme and a preview of the key points.
