CONSUMERS PUSH TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM POWER-WINDOW INJURIES.

Consumer groups submitted a petition Aug. 19 to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to initiate rulemaking to protect children from death and injury involving power-generated windows and roof panels.

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, the Center for Auto Safety, Consumer Federation of America, Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety, KIDS AND CARS, Public Citizen, the Trauma Foundation and the Zoie Foundation signed the petition.

"Power-window injuries require special attention since the majority of the victims are children, particularly young children who typically are under the age of five," they said.

They said Detroit-based automakers have the ability to prevent power-window injuries "but choose not to do so in vehicles sold in the U.S."

They asked NHTSA Administrator Jeffrey Runge to propose requiring "anti-trap mechanisms in all motor vehicles that would reverse the direction of power-window operation when an obstruction is encountered."

They also asked Runge to propose "requiring all manufacturers to install power-window controls to prevent inadvertent engagement by occupants."
