United Bankers' Bank used its 11th annual fall conference to introduce high-tech offerings the Bloomington, Minn.-based company is rolling out. A biometric identification system now stands guard over UBB's online services, and the correspondent bank has teamed with Milwaukee-based Fiserv to offer banks a checkclearing alternative to the Federal Reserve. The conference took place Sept. 15 at the Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club in Prior Lake, Minn.

The Internet technology, known as "U.are.U," relies on fingerprints to identify customers who access UBB's online services, such as overnight funds and investments.
"Since 9/11, we've all heard a lot about biometrics," said Vance Bjorn, chief technology officer at Digital Persona, the company that created U.are.U. "Why is that? A biometric is uniquely individual, it can't be guessed or lost, and it can't be shared. That gives them a significant advantage over passwords and smart cards."
