THE TIMES SQUARE ALLIANCE (Tim Tompkins, president) has announced that it will sponsor free walking tours of Times Square in conjunction with their program, DESIGN TIMES SQUARE, beginning Monday, October 24 and running every Monday afternoon, beginning at 5:15pm, through December 19. The hour and 45
minute tour will begin at the southwest corner of 46th Street and 8th Avenue.
The DESIGN TIMES SQUARE WALKNG TOURS will focus on the nominated buildings, commercial signs, retail interiors and public art works which have been cited as part of DESIGN TIMES SQUARE 2005. These locations represent some of the most cutting edge, quirky and classic design in Times Square. DESIGN TIMES SQUARE honors quality design in the area and encourages the public to learn more about these cites and to vote for their favorite design on their website, www.timessquarenyc.org/design.
Among the stops on the DESIGN TIMES SQUARE WALKING TOUR are:
INTERIORS such as the the lobby swimming pool and cedar-wrapped walls of the Hotel QT and the disco-themed acrylic dance floor of The Whiskey
SIGNAGE such as the classic low-tech "Razzle Dazzle" sign for the musical "Chicago"and the screen-within-a-screen design of the LG billboard
ARCHITECTURE, such as the recently discovered original Tiffany stained glass windows at the Hudson Hotel and the art-deco facade and undulating sign of Hotel41
PUBLIC SPACE AND ART, such as futuristic Millenium manhole covers and Tom Otterness's whimsical characters that decorate the Hilton Times Square
