external debt
- funds obtained from outside an organization, including bank loans and subordinated debt-a measure of financial leverage. In general, external debt is anything that is not equity capital such as common stock or preferred stock.
- total amount of bank debt owed by debtor nations to foreign lenders and creditor banks.
