North America Leads in Knowledge

NORTH AMERICAN regions continue to dominate globally in terms of knowledge competitiveness, according to this year's World Knowldedge Competitiveness Index. Developed by the UK-based economics consultancy Robert Huggins Associates, the index benchmarks the knowledge capacity, capabilities, and sustainability

of 125 regions across the globe - including the extent to which this knowledge translates into economic value and transfers to the wealth of the particular regions.

Overall North America, led by San Francisco (including the Silicon Valley), scored nearly twice as high as Europe, which only slightly outrivals Asia-Pacific - including Tokyo, with the highest-ranked region outside North America and Europe.

The report's principle author, Dr. Robert Huggins, contends that unless Europe recalibrates its competitive strategy, it risks falling in the league table of knowledge-based economies.
