What Would You Design?

Tuesday, May 20 2008

New York Magazine went to 4 different architectural firms and said: “if you had a square block of New York Real estate to develop, and you could do whatever you wanted, what would you come up with?”

The results are definitely worth taking a look at.  Some are feasible today, some maybe a little ahead of their time, but I found them all very encouraging.  This is the kind of thinking that’s going to get us into the future that we need to have.

The two that really clicked with me were the The Locovore Fantasia, by Work AC, and the Subsidized Solution, by Flank. Work AC’s design is an apartment building, that can be best described as a stair case, with each step having working rooftop farms. Flank’s design was an apartment complex, with Target’s legendary logo on the side of the building, thereby exchanging prime advertising space for corporate dollars to subsidize affordable housing for the average American family.
