Australian consumer group Choice took a walk through the local grocery stores, and what they found shows us just how wide and deep greenwashing is. Out of 630 environmental claims made on 185 non-food items, only 3 could be substantiated.
Choice's Chief Executive, Peter Kell, says "greenwash is out of control on supermarket shelves".
Do you think?
They found one product with five different environmental labels, with only one being from an actual accredited society, and they found other products carrying “green” labels after they were ordered not to. Not only does this type of behavior harm the consumer, it harms the companies that are actually living up to their claims. They become lost in a sea of greenwash and consumers don’t know whom to trust.
