Kohl's Department Stores, as reported here last week, took the No. 3 spot in the April ranking of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Green Power Partnership, which works with organizations, companies and universities to help them reduce the environmental impact of electricity use and support the development of new renewable generation capacity.
In other green initiatives, Kohl's:
- Will pursue Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification on all newly constructed stores, beginning this fall.
- Placed energy management systems in all stores. This includes centralized control systems and occupancy sensor lighting for stockrooms, break rooms and offices.
- Recycled, last year, more than 100,000 tons of cardboard, plastic and packaging; 89,000 pounds of cans, glass and aluminum; and 180 million hangers.
- Uses merchandise bags made of 20-percent recycled material and gift boxes made of 100-percent recycled material.
All of this contributed to Working Mother magazine naming Kohl's one of the Best Green Companies for America's children.
