Apr. 8--That distinctive rotten-egg smell around paper mills comes from hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas that aggravates asthma and irritates eyes.
The state Environmental Management Commission has scheduled a vote today to tighten state rules on concentrations of the gas near paper mills, to protect public health. But industry representatives want the commission to permanently exempt from regulation the largest source of the gas: the mills' waste treatment ponds.
