Introduction

Any discussion of the West raises the questions of what is the West, and where does it commence? Indian Country, Mining Country, Cow country, Mormon Country, Spanish Country and the "Factories in the Field" are all facets of the Old West. Superimposed upon these are the faces of the so-called "New West," namely tourism, recreation, retirees and those seeking a more 'ecotopic' lifestyle.
