The University of Momboy in Venezuela is sending mules loaded with books (known as "bibliomulas" or "book mules") into remote areas of the country and encouraging people to read. The project directors declare their four-legged book mobiles a total success and are even beginning to load up the mules

with laptops and film projectors (BBC News, http://news.bbc. co.uk, August 4, 2007).

Eight American students were among the more than 2,100 students from about 25 countries to receive medical diplomas in July 2007 from the Latin American School of Medicine in Cuba. The medical school, opened by President Castro in 1999, offers scholarships to students from around the world and illustrates the island's commitment to universal healthcare. This first class of American students, who started their program in 2001, has been followed by 90 other American students (The Guardian/UK, July 26, 2007).

Salvadoran students are confronting growing repression against the student movement that was inherited from the activist militant organizations of the 1970s. Student protest focuses on campus-wide issues like university funding and fair admission policies as well as social movement issues like increased electricity rates (NACLA Report on the Americas, July/August 2007).
