Power biz buzz: IP's for sale; Likely bidders include Peoples.(News)(Peoples Energy Corp.

Illinois Power Co. is on the sale block, and Chicago-based natural gas utility Peoples Energy Corp. is interested.

Houston's Dynegy Inc., which has owned Illinois Power since 2000, has hired investment banking firm Credit Suisse First Boston LLC to shop the Decatur-based utility, which distributes electricity and gas to 650,000 Downstate customers. Sources say potential buyers include Peoples, Cincinnati-based electric utility Cinergy Corp. and St. Louis-based Ameren Corp., which owns two other Downstate Illinois utilities.
