The deregulation-minded Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) will step up its oversight of electricity and natural gas prices in the weeks ahead. Bending with the political winds, the agency will attempt to head off reregulation of key elements of the electric power industry while deflecting criticism of the Bush administration for lax oversight of the ill-fated Enron energy trading empire.
