iPhone: I Don't Think So

Wednesday, May 21 2008

I don’t have an iPhone. I can’t afford it, and I am pretty sure many of you who are thinking about buying one with their stimulus check can’t afford it either. Why? Because having an iPhone usually means your monthly mobile phone will increase. These days, wireless service is a utility like electricity or gas. What if your electricity bill doubled and not just during the summer with the AC runs all the time? You would contract the customer service rep and scream bloody murder! However when people buy an iPhone and their wireless bill doubles or triples, then most will grin and bear it because having a iPhone is cool. The coolness factor is trumping common sense for many. Yes, I would love to have one. It almost seems to be worth it with the ease of getting online, answering emails quickly and twittering to your heart’s content. But being bleeding edge can bite you in the ass and in your wallet. Spend your stimulus check elsewhere, but surround yourself with friends who will get an iPhone so that you can look up that new restaurant without dialing 4-1-1 or GOOGL.:)

Two cool ways to spend the stimulus check that are good for your business.

  • Host an old-fashioned ice cream social at your office. (Invite clients; it's a business expense)
  • Donate to your someone you know who is doing a walkathon and cheer them on. (Charitable contributions are a great tax deduction)

That's a great post Nichelle. There are lots of phones out there that have a many or all of the Iphone features for less money. For example, the Verizon LG. Businesses should focus on the features they need. Common features that are useful to businesses are ability to send and receive email, on phone navigation and text messaging. Do businesses need to play MP3s and take videos? Maybe, but the point is - businesses should decide in advance what features they need in a wireless phone - not decide on the phone and then justify the features!

I have a simple phone, it's a Razr. Call me old fashioned! ;) My son, however, has been dying to get an iPhone. I have tried to explain to him that there is a certain amount of money that goes with that. If he can afford it, it's his money. But I told him not to expect me to pay anything! I can tell you though that if I am out of the office, it usually means that I am in meetings or meeting a client or investor for lunch. There is nothing more rude than for people to pick up their phones and text or check emails while in a meeting or a business lunch. I, for one, will wait until I get back to the office. I know for some they work great because they are literally out all day, but not worth the added cost here and I have much better things to spend my rebate check on! Great post!!
