JUNO BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 2003
Approximately 250 Florida Power & Light Company employees said goodbye to Virginia this morning and turned their 130-plus vehicles south toward homes and families that they haven't seen since September
"We are very proud of our employees and of the work they accomplished in helping restore electrical service to thousands of Virginia and North Carolina residents after the damage inflicted by Hurricane Isabel," said Geisha Williams, FPL vice president - distribution. "It is particularly gratifying to know that they achieved their mission without a serious injury in spite of hazardous conditions and difficult terrain."
Working under the direction of Dominion Virginia Power and Dominion North Carolina Power, FPL crews were assigned to restoration efforts in several areas: Fredericksburg in northern Virginia; Hampton, Gloucester, York and Surrey in eastern Virginia, and just across the North Carolina line in Ahoskie. Although Isabel was a category one hurricane, the storm was widespread, with winds and rain causing extensive damage to most of Virginia and parts of North Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania. More than five million customers of utilities serving those areas lost power, including many who were without service for more than a week.
"Each member of the restoration team will bring back to Florida memories of this effort, but all will share the common memory of the wonderful reception they received from residents when we turned their lights back on...children providing our crews with gifts to take back to their children, home-cooked meals after long days of hard work, and words of praise and thanks every where they went," Williams said.
