The White House has turned green - at least when it comes to meeting part of its energy needs.
The federal government and its contractors installed the first solar electric system at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in late 2002.
The system includes 167 solar electric panels on the roof of the complex's main maintenance building. The 9-kilowatt photovoltaic system feeds solar-generated power directly into the White House grounds' distribution system.
