Utility Plans Wind Farm At Abandoned Wyoming Coal Mine

Glenrock, Wyo.— Rocky Mountain Power of Salt Lake City has announced plans to construct a 66-turbine wind farm at the reclaimed Dave Johnston coal mine near Glenrock in Converse County. The Glenrock Wind Energy Project will contribute 99 megawatts of renewable energy to Rocky Mountain Power's

parent company, PacifiCorp.

Barring delays in regulatory approval, the General Electric wind turbines could be operational by October 2008. The proposed project site is located entirely on land owned by the company and encompasses more than 14,000 acres, a portion of which is the former mine site.

The Dave Johnston mine operated from 1958 to 2000, supplying coal for the company's nearby Dave Johnston Power Plant at Glenrock. The mine site has been fully reclaimed and the power plant now gets its fuel from another mine in the Powder River Basin — Western Fuel Associates' Dry Fork mine near Gillette.
