Nuclear viability

IT'S BEEN 30 years since the last nuclear plant was ordered in the United States; however, top officials within the Bush administration are now discussing the possibility of building hundreds of new nuclear reactors to provide more electricity and less carbon emission.

One of the main issues

to be resolved before such plans are put into action is where to store an estimated 77,000 tons of radioactive waste. The Energy Department is trying to determine if Yucca Mountain, about 90 miles from Las Vegas, is a suitable long-term repository.

Additionally, experts feel the industry needs plants that are cheaper to build. The Nuclear Energy Institute says reactors would have to sell for no more than $1,000 for each kilowatt of generating capacity. Although this is about double the amount it costs for a kilowatt of capacity at natural gas plants, nuclear reactors are less costly to run.
