Osage Bio Energy is betting on barley, and so is First Reserve Corporation, who just committed $300 million to Osage’s barley to ethanol project in Virginia. The production facilities will be the first in the U.S. They’re betting on Barley because barley is grown in the winter and does not compete with food production. There’s five million acres of farmland in the area that could be filled with barley every winter. It’s great for the soil because it prevents nutrient runoff, which makes for better summer crops. The co-product of the barley-based ethanol can be used as a protein meal for farm animals.
