Almost 50 Ukrainian coal miners were killed in late August by a blast at the Zasyadko mine, near Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. The blast is presumed to have been caused by the ignition of methane gas and coal dust, and occurred at a depth of more than 1,000 m. The accident is the second of its type at the mine in just over two years, and is the latest in a tragic list of gas/dust explosions in the Ukrainian coal mining industry. There were 259 miners underground at the time of the blast.]
