MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 1995-- Macrovision Corporation announced today that Apple Computer, Inc. has signed a license to incorporate Macrovision's proprietary copy protection technology in its new line of digital set-top decoders.
These decoders will be used to deliver
Apple's first set-top decoder products are based on a modified Macintosh platform. Utilizing MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 compression algorithms, Apple's customers will be able to deliver in excess of one hundred channels of home entertainment and interactive TV. Paul Nixon, ITV Development Manager for Apple Computer, Inc., said, "Apple is pleased to provide Macrovision's pay-per-view (PPV) anticopy technology on our set-top box in trials throughout the world. This technology will add value to our Interactive TV solution."
Bill Krepick, Macrovision's Senior Vice President, added, "We are pleased to have Apple Computer join our select list of licensed set-top decoder manufacturers. Apple's Interactive TV product line marks the first time Macrovision has licensed its technology to a computer manufacturer."
Major PPV programmers recognize the importance of copy protection in the digital PPV world, and have encouraged cable TV, telephone company and DBS operators to specify copy protection in their set-top decoders. Macrovision's technology is accepted by copyright owners throughout the world, is easy to integrate inside set-top hardware, and has become the de facto PPV copy protection standard among digital set-top decoder manufacturers and PPV system operators. The copy protection technology is incorporated into off-the-shelf NTSC or PAL digital-to-analog color encoder integrated circuits, one of which is required in each Macrovision-enabled set-top decoder. These circuits are available from any of nine Macrovision authorized semiconductor component suppliers. Fourteen set-top decoder manufacturers are licensed by Macrovision to incorporate these circuits in their set-top decoders. Macrovision licenses its technology for use on PPV programs by system operators or program providers. It is not licensed for broadcast or subscription Pay TV programs.
