TEMPE, Ariz. -- Brillian Corporation (NASDAQ: BRLC), a leading developer of 720p and 1080p Gen II liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS(TM)) HDTVs and microdisplay components, today announced availability of its UltraContrast(TM) BLE1080 light engine. Brillian's
new, fully solid state light engine, as well as its Gen II LCoS(TM)-based HDTVs, and latest near-to-eye (NTE) microdisplay products will be showcased in off-site, private sessions during the Society for Information Display (SID) conference in Boston, May 24 - 26, 2005.Minimal Light Engine Development Effort and Costs
The UltraContrast(TM) Brillian BLE1080 is a complete, turnkey light engine ideally suited to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) looking to quickly enter the high-performance 1920 x 1080 (1080p) HDTV market with minimal development and tooling costs. The fully featured light engine includes a lamp, color management system, relay optics, projection lens, three fully converged 1080p LCoS(TM) imagers, mechanical housing, reference design for the driver printed circuit board (PCB), and a license to proprietary uniformity correction intellectual property (IP).
Designed for 60- to 70-inch screen diagonals, the Brillian BLE1080 light engine offers ultra-high-performance grayscale rendition, contrast ratio, sharpness, uniformity, and convergence. It is the foundation for HDTV products that rival today's top-performing LCOS-based systems due to its superior color fidelity and crystal-clear images.
Eliminating Technical Risks for OEMs
The fully solid state light engine eliminates the need for motorized color wheels or spinning prisms. Also, the exceedingly fast response time of UltraContrast(TM) Gen II LCoS(TM) technology ensures that even the fastest sequences are projected without annoying blurring or tearing artifacts. Further, the engine's unsurpassed image quality is achieved by eliminating the "screen door" effect that characterizes plasma, LCD, and projection LCD TVs.
LCOS Market Heats Up
"In a major advance, microdisplay-based rear-projection TVs currently dominate the high-end home theater market," said Tamaryn Pratt of market research firm Quixel Research. "According to our 2004 year end report, MicroDisplay Rear-Projection Market Review, worldwide sales of microdisplay RPTVs grew an astounding 225 percent in dollar value year-to-year from 2003 to 2004. While all regions showed marked increase, the U.S. made up a significant 86 percent of that market."
