Panasonic Rewritable DVD

Panasonic and CyberLink announced today that CyberLink's complete line of high-performance, easy-to-use DVD and MPEG-2 video capture, editing, production and playback solutions support Panasonic's 4.7GB DVD-RAM drives and media.

With CyberLink advanced video and audio technology, users can produce DV and MPEG- 1 or -2 video output that can be economically stored and played back on removable, rewritable DVD discs. Panasonic and CyberLink will be demonstrating the products at the COMDEX DVD-RAM Pavilion, Booth L6459.

CyberLink's personal and professional video authoring and production software products include PowerDVR II, PowerDVD and Medi@Show. Used with Panasonic's DVD-RAM drives, up to 2 hours of theater-quality business, educational and home videos can be stored on a bare, single-sided 4.7GB disc. The videos can then be played back on the Panasonic DVD-RAM drives, newer-generation DVD-ROM drives and the recently announced DVD players and DVD recorders.

PowerDVR II offers a superior alternative to television time shifting with a VCR and hardware-based MPEG-1, -2 encoding technologies for real-time video recording. Taking advantage of today's faster PCs, CyberLink provides users with the ability to record a program onto DVD-RAM media, leave for a period of time, then come back and watch what they missed, while the program is still being recorded. In addition, users can record programs in real-time in MPEG-1 or 2 format for high quality, easy and low-cost archiving.

PowerDVD incorporates a proprietary MPEG-2 video decoding engine that supports full 720 x 480 resolution for NTSC video playback and 720 x 576 for PAL. The 5.1-channel or 2-channel Dolby Digital audio decoded streams are sent through S/PDIF to the external Dolby Digital decoder for high-fidelity decoding and playback. PowerDVD also supports VR, allowing users to record video, save it to DVD-RAM discs and later playback the recorded video by using PowerDVD. The latest version of PowerDVD includes features such as i-Power service that provides users with direct access to unlimited multimedia resources on the Internet as well as multiple skin selections, bookmark viewer functions, close caption, multiple subtitles, screen capture and many other functions to maximize DVD enjoyment on the PC.

With Medi@Show, users can directly import media clips from a multitude of sources including a PC camera, scanner or camcorder. Files can be quickly and easily arranged using the drag & drop method. After the files have been placed, Medi@Show lets the user carry out their creative editing work with a full range of authoring, editing and effects tools. When they are satisfied with the multimedia presentation, they can store it to DVD-RAM for later presentation or streaming over the Internet.

The Panasonic DVD-RAM drive combines the ease of use and random access of a hard drive with transfer rates of up to 22.16Mb/sec and 95msec access times. A versatile solution, the drive will also read from discs currently accepted by CD-ROM, CD Audio, CD-R, CD-RW and video CD drives, as well as DVD video, DVD-ROM and DVD-R drives.

Panasonic Industrial Company's OEM DVD-RAM drive is available as an internal drive with an ATAPI interface (model LF-D211N) or as a SCSI-2 interface (model LF-D291N). The Panasonic-branded internal drive, model LF-D201U, is available from Panasonic Document Imaging Company (PDIC) and has an MSRP of $549. Double-sided 9.4GB DVD-RAM media, 4.7GB single-sided media and 4.7GB bare disc media; which is marketed under the Panasonic brand name, is also available from several other leading manufacturers. The 4.7GB bare disc DVD-RAM media can be played back on the latest Panasonic DVD-ROM drives, as well as Panasonic's new DVD Player and DVD Recorder.
