IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 2000

Kofax Image Products has shipped Software VRS, a pure software version of its award-winning VirtualReScan (VRS) document image scanning solution.

This new version extends VRS availability to workgroup and departmental scanners operating at up to 30 pages per minute.

VRS earned Imaging and Document Solutions Magazine's Best of Show Award at AIIM '99 for its ability to automatically create unrivaled document image quality and eliminate trial-and-error scanner adjustments.

Lab tests have confirmed that VRS reduces the time needed to prepare documents for scanning, increases optical character recognition accuracy and eliminates expensive, time-consuming document rescanning. Patented, Kofax-developed document image processing algorithms are the key to its performance.

Multi-part forms such as shipping airbills, or any documents that are difficult to scan effectively, benefit most from VRS. A comparison of such documents scanned with and without VRS clearly shows that scans produced by VRS for on-screen review and workflow are obviously easier to read than non-VRS images. In fact, non-VRS scans of common forms often result in solid black images.

Examples may be viewed at www.virtualrescan.com.

VRS operates automatically, behind the scenes, between the scanner and the scanning application running on the host PC. This makes it a good fit for remote, distributed, scanning operations where employees add scanning to their other duties.

"VRS gives us trouble-free operation for our inexperienced remote scan operators," said Thurman Bush, project leader at national financial brokerage J.C. Bradford & Co. He said VRS also offers scanner management benefits beyond image quality.

"For example, if you have a paper jam, you don't have to rescan the entire batch. VRS stops the scanner and you can reload the jammed page and restart where you left off," he said.

Now available for Personal and Professional Scanners

For the first time, software VRS brings these benefits to inexpensive personal and professional scanners from Canon, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Kodak, Panasonic and Ricoh.

A hardware-software version remains available for high-speed, production-class document scanners from Bell & Howell, Fujitsu and Ricoh.

Three versions of software VRS are available:

-- Software VRS for Personal Scanners
    Certified for the following scanners:
HP ScanJet 6250C, HP ScanJet 6300C, HP ScanJet 6350C

-- Software VRS for Professional Scanners
    Certified for the following scanners:
    Bell & Howell 500FB, Canon DR4080U, Canon DR5080C, Fujitsu M3091DC,
    Fujitsu M3092DC, Fujitsu M3093GX, Kodak DS1500, Panasonic KV-S6040W
    Panasonic KV-S6045W and Ricoh IS01.

-- Software VRS for Professional Scanners with Adrenaline Image
Processing. Adds bar code reading, forms recognition, line removal
    and other document processing features.

"Like the original, software VRS produces perfect images on the first try, without being a scanning expert. Anyone can simply load any combination of document types into the scanner and simply press the scan button. VRS will automatically straighten, crop and optimize exposure in real-time," said Kofax Product Marketing Manager JD Moons.

Compatibility and Availability

VRS software is available now from authorized Kofax distributors worldwide. VRS software can be used with any Kofax ImageControls-based application as well as the scanners listed above. A free upgrade for TWAIN and ISIS(R) application support will be available soon. End-user pricing starts at well under $500. For specific pricing and volume discounts, contact a Kofax reseller or distributor.
