Will public wireless LAN hot spots burn 3G? (Financial Perspectives: Europe).

It is not news that mobile operators in Germany and the UK got burned on UMTS. Each 3G licence halder in Ger many laid out an eye-watering [euro]619 per head of population, and the figure in the UK was higher - [euro]654 a head, according to Mummert + Partner, a group of Hamburg-based consultants. Back then, operators believed they had to have 3G. However, if supporters of PWLAN - non-roaming broadband access on unlicensed 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrum - are right, 3G may be superfluous.

To maximise return, 3G operators in Germany and the UK are concentrating infrastructure
