Qualcomm Inc. today announced that it has extended LSI Logic Corp.'s code division multiple access (CDMA) technology to VIA Telecom Inc.

The assignment calls for VIA, a privately held fabless semiconductor company, to receive LSI's cdmaOne and CDMA2000 1X ASICs license under Qualcomm's patented CDMA technology.

The royalty-bearing license agreement enables VIA to develop, manufacture and sell cdmaOne and CDMA2000 1X ASICs to Qualcomm's subscriber equipment licensees for digital cellular, personal communications services and wireless local loop applications around the world, the companies said. No details on the royalties were given.

"This agreement allows us to provide our wireless customers with a baseband processor solution, for use in a wide variety of CDMA2000 devices offering voice, data and GPS-enabled applications, which will help deliver time-to-market and product differentiation advantages keyed by the CDMA standard," said Ker Zhang, VIA's CEO, in a statement. "VIA Telecom is excited to expand its product offering to include ASIC solutions for the global CDMA2000 market, and to continue working with Qualcomm on accelerating the growth of CDMA2000 worldwide."

The license assignment comes as a result of VIA's acquisition of LSI's CDMA wireless division, which entered into a licensee agreement with Qualcomm in 1997.
