WHY: Inner-City Arts is dedicated to bringing the arts into the
lives of the children who live in and near Los Angeles' inner
city. Through bilingual, innovative programs in the visual
and performing arts, the organization encourages
self-expression and creativity while building the skills
children need to succeed in school.
Inner-City Arts recently began construction in the addition
of 24,000 square feet, which will enable the organization to
provide services for 20,000 students a year -- 12,000 more
than can presently be served. The innovative architectural
designs of Michael Maltzan are transforming decaying
warehouses into a state-of-the-art animation studio, a
professional-quality theatre that will expand programs for
middle and high school students, a new visual arts center, a
newly-created outdoor teaching space, a second ceramics
studio, a library and conference center.
