Leadership and the Three Magic Questions
The more you know about your staff, the quicker you are to motivate, manage, and utilize their talents effectively at work.
I have had a fascination with what makes a great leader for over three decades, since I was Student Council President of my junior high school. Over the years, I have been a manager, taught leadership and have provided consulting and coaching to many executives. Even with so much experience, I still have much to learn about how to be an effective leader myself. It is a humbling process.
But here is what I know for sure. If supervisors earnestly ask their employees the following three magic questions and keep the answers in mind, they will become better leaders immediately.
1. What are your personal and professional dreams for the future?
2. What inspires you?
3. What can I do to help you achieve these dreams?
Unfortunately, most managers will not take the time to do this. Those who do, rise above the rest and give people what is missing in most corporate environments: humanity. Truly pioneering leaders will even help employees find answers to these questions when they are not at all sure of the answers. The more you know about your staff, the quicker you are to motivate, manage, and utilize their talents effectively at work.
For those of you that do not have this type of boss, or may be self-employed, it may be time to take back your career and lead yourself. You can ask and answer the same questions for yourself:
1. What are my personal and professional dreams for the future?
2. What inspires me?
3. What can I do to help myself achieve these dreams?
In future blogs, I will address issues concerning leadership, career transitions and work/life balance that are important to you.
