YONKERS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 8, 2000
As part of an effort to market its services to well-targeted market segments, Educational Video Conferencing, Inc. (Nasdaq: EVCI; PCX: EVI; BSE: EVI) has entered into a multiyear agreement with the
EVCI is a leading aggregator and distributor, via live interactive conferencing systems, of accredited college courses and degree programs, as well as corporate training, professional development and continuing education programs. EVCI and the Association, under the agreement, will jointly market EVCI's services to members, who require job-related and other college courses in order to rise to supervisory positions.
"The flexible schedules and course offerings EVCI makes available can be key to our membership's successfully reaching their educational goals," said Norman Seabrook, association president. "That's because the erratic schedules worked by many of our members makes it difficult for them to operate on most college schedules."
Dr. Arol I. Buntzman, EVCI chairman and CEO, added, "We expect to begin offering courses in Fall 2000 from a number of schools with solid Criminal Justice degree programs. We will have the flexibility-via synchronous and asynchronous delivery-to make them convenient for everyone."
The importance of facilitating educational opportunity is critical to the career advancement of corrections officers. Norman Seabrook stated, "Once corrections officers earn 60 college credits, they become eligible for supervisory positions within the corrections system." EVCI will assist the membership in evaluating the number of credits already earned through past college experience or through appropriate life experience so that they can complete their coursework in the shortest time possible. Under the agreement, the Union is obligated to market the program to its members. Thus, in a letter from the President to the members, Seabrook stated,
"For many of you, the goal of earning a college degree has been postponed because of your schedule. I am concerned about this limitation on your career paths. COBANYC is now able to assist you in completing a college degree program. Because of new developments in technology, you can attend college without leaving the comforts of your home. You take courses whenever you like, regardless of your work hours. How is this possible? By enrolling in college courses that are delivered through the Internet to a personal computer in your home, you can complete an Associate's Degree, a Bachelor's Degree, and even a Master's Degree. You can complete your coursework at a time that best fits your personal schedule - even at 2:00 a.m. in the morning."
Dr. John J. McGrath, EVCI president, who has a doctorate in law and criminal justice and has taught several such programs, said he views the corrections system as a perfect environment for the array of distance-learning services EVCI provides.
EVCI and the Association will provide course schedules twice a year to the New York City membership, then will work together to outfit video-enabled classrooms for group sessions where appropriate and will bring classes directly to PCs in students' homes as appropriate.
