What: Rosemary Corr and Joseph Maglione Jr., the parents of
Lance Cpl. Joseph B. Maglione III, the first United States
college student killed during Operation
Iraqi Freedom,
will accept a posthumous bachelor of science degree in
engineering at the University's 116th commencement this
Saturday, it has been announced by Drexel President
Constantine Papadakis.
Corr and Maglione Jr. and 11 other family members will
attend the ceremony and be seated in the front row.
A U.S. Marine reservist, Maglione died on April 1, 2003,
in a non-combat weapon discharge at Camp Coyote in Kuwait.
The 22-year-old was a member of Bridge Company Bravo, 6th
Engineer Support Battalion and 4th Force Service Support
Group of Folsom, Pa.
When: Saturday, June 14, 2003, 3:30 p.m.
Where: Drexel's John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center (33rd and
Market streets)
Visuals: Following the conferral of bachelor's degrees, University
Provost Harvill Eaton will lead Corr and Maglione Jr. to
the stage, where Papadakis will greet them with
handshakes, hugs and their son's degree.
Background: The Drexel Board of Trustees unanimously approved the
conferral of Maglione's posthumous degree at its May
meeting ... The University's College of Engineering and
Department of Athletics have established a scholarship
fund in Maglione's name, which will benefit Drexel
student-athletes studying engineering.
