Former Chattanoogan Flowerree Whitaker Galetovic was recognized for her contributions to Tennessee's visual arts students and to the Governor's School for the Arts with a Teacher of the Year Award.
The award was presented in Nashville at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center during a ceremony celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Governor's School.
Mrs. Galetovic is an art and art history teacher at Bearden High School in Knoxville. She was the Tennessee Art Educator of the Year in 1999. Girls Preparatory School named her a Margaret Rawlings Lupton Award of Excellence winner in 2006. She is president of the Tennessee Art Education Association.
In June, Mrs. Galetovic was honored at Carnegie Hall by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for outstanding teaching.
Two chosen for leadership weeks
* Adrian Smith Jr. was selected to attend National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.
The week-long conference introduces students to national leaders through panels and seminars and includes trips to national monuments.
The seventh-grader at Dalewood Middle School is the son of Nina Pierce and Victoria Appleberry.
* Miya Montgomery completed a week at the National Young Scholars Program held on the campus of Wake Forest University.
Miya participated in "Medicine: The Incredible Human Body" program. In addition to the medical curriculum, the program focused on developing the students as future leaders in medicine.
The daughter of Michael and Vanessa Montgomery is a middle school student at Silverdale Baptist Academy. She was recently named Little Miss Jabberwock.
Area students earn honors
* Joanna Marie Poinsatte and Matthew Clinton Hardeman are two of 188 students in the country and Canada to receive an academic scholarship from the Fred and Mary Koch Foundation.
The scholarship program was begun by the Kochs for dependents of Koch employees. Both recipients are children of an INVISTA Sarl employee.
At Notre Dame High School, Miss Poinsatte was a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club and Mu Alpha Theta math honor society. She rows with the Chattanooga Junior Rowing team.
She is the daughter of John and Mary Anne Poinsatte and is a freshman at University of Notre Dame.
Mr. Hardeman is the son of Michael and Kimberly Hardeman.
* Melisa A. Smith of Rossville, a student at Dalton State College, has received an Alpha Mu Tau Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was presented during the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science's annual meeting in Chicago.
* The United States Achievement Academy announces that Jasmone Edwards has been named an All-American Scholars At-Large Award Winner. The student at East Hamilton Middle-High School will be listed in the All-American Scholar yearbook.
She is the daughter of Danielle and Romell Edwards.
